My TripAdvisor Review No.486: Prince Rupert Adventure Tours, Canada.

Grizzly Bear Adventure.

Prince Rupert Adventure Tours organize one of the most amazing offshore trips on the north western coast of Canada. It is almost a day long trip and starts based on the timings of the tides. They have two main trips. The first is a grizzly bear trip to the Khutzeymateen Bear Sanctuary which is about 7 hours long, and the other is a Whale watching trip which is a bit shorter.

We took the bear watching trip to Khutzeymateen Sanctuary which started around 1 pm that day. We went aboard their 100 seater Catamaran, ‘Inside Passage’, which operates swiftly and without much noise. It has long windows with good visibility and large outer deck space from where we got a better view of the scenery along the shore lines. The staff are very knowledgeable about the wildlife and the history and surroundings of Prince Rupert.

Not only did we get to see some grizzly bears and a pair of cubs, but some humpback whales and bald eagles. It was indeed a unique and wonderful trip into the wild countryside of British Columbia.

My TripAdvisor Review No.485: Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, British Columbia.

Wild And Wonderful.

Spotting grizzly bears in the wild is a wonderful experience. It was a once in a lifetime experience for us. Besides grizzly bears we were also lucky to sight a humpback whale, dolphins, a sea lion and some bald eagles on the way.

We had booked a day trip with Prince Rupert Adventure Tours who took us in their specialized ferry which glides almost noiselessly on the sea. When we approached close to the bears in the sanctuary they would slow down and hover close to the banks so that we could observe the bears with their cubs without disturbing them. Of course, we were all told to maintain silence lest we scare the bears away.

This trip to the sanctuary is a ‘must do’ if you happen to visit Prince Rupert.

My TripAdvisor Review No.484: Sunken Gardens Park, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Exotic Flowers.

The Sunken Gardens is a beautiful place to visit very near to the Cow Bay area of Prince Rupert. It is hidden away in the grounds and behind the Rupert Courthouse. We had to enter it through a small tunnel and there is an exit through another tunnel, though these tunnels can be avoid by entering from the courthouse grounds.

Watching the cheerful colored flowers and green trimmed bushes is bound to perk up anyone’s feeling of well-being. Since we were staying in a hostel nearby we would often take the short cut through the Sunken Gardens to emerge at Cow Bay and the Prince Rupert Harbor.

My TripAdvisor Review No.483: Pho 88 Restaurant, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Taste Of Vietnam.

Po-88 is a nice Vietnamese restaurant located on 3rd Avenue in Prince Rupert. They have simple furnishings and décor with some artificial flowers and Vietnamese pictures decorating the walls.

We tried their Stir Fried Shrimp and Squid on Rice, and a Cheese Burger with French Fries and both tasted good and the quantities were substantial. Service was friendly and courteous. Prices were reasonable.

We would have visited again if we had stayed longer in Prince Rupert.

My TripAdvisor Review No.482: Trishan Food Market, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Trishan Food Mart is an Indian Take-away restaurant. They have no facility for dine-in. They have a pre-set menu of stand-alone dishes as well as some combos which include rice and naan.

Indian Take-away.

They have a good selection of non-vegetarian Indian dishes like Chicken Curry, Lamb Curry, Butter Chicken, Fish Curry, Prawn Curry. For the vegetarians they serve Mix Vegetable Curry, Cabbage and Carrots, Chickpea, Beet and Red Lentils. Side dishes included Samosa, Spring Roll, Butter Chicken Wrap, and Vegetable Raitha.

We tried out their Mix Vegetables combo in which they gave us flavored rice and naan. They also gave us a complimentary Samosa. The quantity served was substantial but the taste left much to be desired. Maybe we should have tried their non veg fare.

They are open to take orders from 11 am to 8 pm.

My TripAdvisor Review No.481: Subway, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Open For Breakfast.

Subway was one of the very few restaurants in Prince Rupert which open early at 8 am. On our first day in the town we were doing a morning walk downtown looking for a breakfast place but most of the places were closed till we found Subway.

It is also one of the few restaurants where you can buy a vegetarian meal. We ordered a foot long vegetarian sub and enjoyed it for breakfast. The regular subs with ham, chicken and tuna were also available, as well as an egg sub which is popular at breakfast time. We had a pack of fruit juice to quench our thirst and packed some chocolate cookies.

The Subs are also very filling and easy on the pocket. We sat at the restaurant and enjoyed the ambiance.

My TripAdvisor Review No.480: Rupert Square Mall, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Mall With A Walmart Store.

We visited the Rupert Square Mall just because Walmart had a presence here and we needed some groceries for our 5 day stay at Prince Rupert. There were some other prominent establishments as well but we only visited the Dollarama Store after buying a few things from Walmart. Shopper’s Drug Mart also has an outlet on the ground level.

The Mall is very near to the Rotary Waterfront Park and just off the Yellowhead Highway so the location is very good for people headed north to Alaska, or for those staying at Prince Rupert. Plenty of parking is available in the compound of the mall.

My TripAdvisor Review No.479: Dolly's Fish Market, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Salmon Or Halibut.

Salmon or Halibut are the two main choices of the best fish from the west coast of Canada. At Dolly’s Fish Market this was the dilemma that we had to ponder after looking at the menu. Of course, there is cod and shrimp too. Finally I picked on the Smoked Salmon to go with a ‘Dolly’s Classic Salad’ and a can of beer. It came with a wedge of lemon, seafood and tartar sauce. My wife went for the Caesar Salad without any fish. Both of us enjoyed our dishes.

Dolly’s is quite crowded on weekends and we were lucky to get a table as we came early for lunch. The restaurant is housed in a brightly painted brick red metal shed with glass windows and has spacious and well-furnished interiors. The prices are moderate and the service is friendly. We were served by a courteous oriental lady.

Dolly’s Fish Market includes a fish processing unit as well as an outlet for fresh fish next door. It is well located in the Cow Bay area of Prince Rupert and is a prominent landmark.

My TripAdvisor Review No.478: Lee & Ann Restaurant, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Good Oriental Restaurant.

We stepped into Lee & Ann’s Restaurant for lunch on one of many walks along 3rd Avenue in Prince Rupert downtown area. It is a neat and simple place serving Vietnamese and Oriental cuisine.

We were served by a Vietnamese lady. Both of us ordered noodle dishes. One was a Stir Fried Pork in Egg Noodles, and the other was a vegetarian Stir Fred Vegetables in Rice (flat) Noodles. The quantities were generous and we had to box some of it.

The service was friendly but a tad slow. The prices were reasonable and we enjoyed the taste of the dishes with chopsticks.

My TripAdvisor Review No.477: Cow Bay Pioneer Guesthouse, Prince Rupert, Canada.

Cozy Room.

We arrived late in the night as our train was delayed, but there was someone at the reception to acknowledge our booking and guided us to our room on the first floor up a narrow flight of stairs. At first we were surprised at the small size of our room, but being tired we dropped off to sleep in the comfy beds. This guesthouse is really a hostel with private rooms as well.

Later we appreciated the compactness of our private room as it had a small table big enough for my laptop, a small fan and lamp, a shelf to keep stuff and a coat rail with about ten hangers, and a small cabinet in one corner of the room. There was a common room at the lobby where one could watch TV and also had two workstations and an ironing board. Free tourist literature was available in the bookshelves. The washrooms were shared ones just adjacent to our room and provided with soap, shampoo, tissues and toilet paper.

There was even a community kitchen where we would cook and have our meals and saved a lot of money by having one meal in the hostel. However the laundry and dryer were not working and we had to visit a laundromat about a 10 minute walk away. Parking is available in an open ground outside the hostel.

Many of the attractions, shopping places and harbour are nearby at Cowbay and Downtown and we would easily walk the distance. The beautiful Sunken Garden is very close and we would often walk through the garden to reach Cowbay in quick time.

We enjoyed our stay at the hostel and would definitely come back again.

My TripAdvisor Review No.476: Travelodge Wyndham Prince George, Canada.

Good Value.

We stayed at this hotel in Prince George as an overnight stopover to Prince Rupert from Jasper on the VIA Rail trip. The hotel and the room more than met our expectations for the price we paid.

Even though we arrived late in the night due to the train being late we were given a very warm welcome by Daryl at the reception. We checked in to our room within 5 minutes. The furnishings and décor were very contemporary. There was a flat screen TV, two queen sized beds, coffee maker, sofa and closet. The bathroom was well stocked and had a bathtub as well.

In the morning we had the complimentary breakfast, served early at 6.30 am, and it was very nourishing for our onward journey to Prince Rupert.

We stayed here barely for nine hours but wish we could have stayed longer.

My TripAdvisor Review No.475: Whistler Olympic Plaza, Whistler, Canada.

Celebration Of The 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The Whistler Olympic Plaza is a large open space surrounded by hotels and restaurants. It has beautiful manicured laws and a walking plaza leading into the Whistler Village shopping plaza. You can visit more restaurants, confectionery and curio shops down the walking plaza.

Vehicles are not allowed to ply in the plaza and there is sufficient designated parking areas within walking distance.

The Olympic Plaza is beautifully laid out. As you enter the open area you will see the Olympic Rings where all the visitors pose to have their pictures taken. There is a placard explaining the significance of the Plaza. It is a place where the participants were feted and awarded their medals during the events in Winter 2010.

It is the center of attraction and the focal point of Whistler.

My TripAdvisor Review No.474: Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada.

All Seasons Holiday Resort.

The Whistler Blackcomb mountains are a pair of mountain peaks in the Western region of British Columbia in Canada. It is located in one of the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains and is the home of the all season resort more commonly known as Whistler. It is the biggest ski area in all of North America.

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games were hosted at Whistler. It is almost perpetually covered with snow most of the year, and the gentle slopes of the mountain sides make it very suitable for skiing, biking and hiking. There are many ziplines as well. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola ride is absolutely top-of-the-list must do in Whistler Blackcomb. The views from the gondolas are simply spectacular.

At the peaks of either the Whistler or Blackcomb mountain there are restaurants and washrooms where you can enjoy your meals gazing at the beautiful scenery. You can also do some shopping for souvenirs or clothes.

There are many lodging resorts to stay in Whistler. The sloping roofs of all the buildings and the beautiful architecture give the village a very Swiss-like Alpine atmosphere. It is a place worth visiting for a great vacation.

My TripAdvisor Review No.473: Rendezvous Lodge, Blackcomb Mountain, Canada.

Mountaintop Mall.

The Rendezvous Lodge is at the top of the Blackcomb Mountain, which is connected to Whistler Mountain by the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. After taking the gondola across from Whistler we thought we’d have a bite at the cafeteria in the Lodge.

The restaurant serves mainly American and Canadian fast foods like burgers, salads, French fries, poutine, muffins, cakes, coffee and cold drinks. Better than the cold drinks was the fresh cold mountain spring water which was available free at the water fountains near the washrooms.

But the USP of the restaurant is the splendid mountain views all around. The large windows all around ensure that you do not miss out on the spectacular views while enjoying your meal.

There is a gift and curio shop also in the building and the items available like mementos and clothing were of fairly good design and quality.

My TripAdvisor Review No.472: Roundhouse Lodge, Whistler, Canada.

Mountaintop Dining.

The Roundhouse Lodge is at the top of the Whistler Mountain. After taking the gondola up for the Peak 2 Peak experience we thought we’d have a bite before the ride.

The restaurant serves buffet as well as different types of ala-carte. We decided to go for the noodles and wrap with salad. It was quite a mouthful and the taste was satisfactory. There was no service to speak of as it was self service although the lady at the salad bar helped us to decide on the options available.

One can eat in the enclosed dining hall or outside under the umbrellas if it is not too cold or rainy, the choice is up to you. The views of the mountains from the restaurant is spectacular.
