“First Among the Swayambhu Ganpatis.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2015 NEW
This Ganpati temple at Morgaon near Pune has one of the eight Swayambhu (self formed, not made by man) Ganpati idols in the state of Maharashtra. The devotees who do the AshtaVinayak yatra, or pilgrimage of the eight Swayambhus always start at this temple, and end the yatra also at this temple.
The temple is made of black stone and is surrounded by a high wall. As you enter you are greeted by an idol of the Nandi Bull. There is also an idol of his vehicle, the mouse, enclosed in a glass case, and a large deepa stambha (pillar for lamps). As you enter the inner sanctum you will see the idols of two huge peacocks above the door. The name 'Mayureshwar Ganpati' has been derived from the peacocks which used to inhabit Morgaon village. The vermilion coloured Ganpati idol sits regally in the sanctum, silently blessing his devotees.
Decorum is maintained in the temple by the pujaris, and despite the large crowds we were able to get Lord Ganeshas blessings in half an hour. Outside the temple there are numerous stalls selling offerings, as well as restaurants where you can buy a decent vegetarian meal. Parking lot for vehicles is about 300 meters away from the temple.
Morgaon is about 80 km from Pune city. Take NH9 (Pune Sholapur highway) past Hadapsar, Loni, Uruli Kancahn, Yevat, till you reach Chaufula. At Chaufula you have to turn right to get on to the Ahmednagar Satara highway, and go past Supa till you reach Morgaon.

My TripAdvisor Review No.91: Kapila Resort, Wagholi, Pune.
“A Green Retreat near Pune City.”
4 of 5 starsReviewed 2 days ago NEW
This Resort is just 15 km. from the city of Pune, but once you reach there it is as if you have traveled far away from the noise and bustle of the city. It is located just outside the city limits at Wagholi. As you travel down towards Ahmednagar on the Pune-Nagar Road, about 3 km after passing the Mundhwa crossing, you will see a sign board of 'Choki Dhani' on the right. Take a U-turn and go down this lane for about 2 km till you reach the gates of 'Dhole Patil College' and enter the resort.
The rooms are located at the end of the lane on the right. They are well furnished and have ac and a balcony with a sit-out. The grounds are clean and green, and there is a small lake with an island in the centre. They also have a conference hall, amphitheatre, party lawns, and a multi-cuisine restaurant and bar.
We did not spend the night at the resort, but we had lunch at their restaurant, and quite enjoyed the open air ambiance of the restaurant. The restaurant is open from all sides and they don't have an ac section, but being open from all sides there is a cool breeze at all times.
Their tandoori dishes are excellent. We ordered a platter of 'Mila Jula Kebabs' with nan, roti, onion salad, and green mint chutney. The meat was succulent and well marinated and we liked the different tastes of the variety of kebabs.
There is sufficient parking around the restaurant and near the rooms at the resort.

My TripAdvisor Review No.90; Ganga Retreat Countryside, Pune.
“From Bad to Worse.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW
We had been staying at this resort for many years, ever since we became members. In the beginning they had a very nice ambience, cool green lawns, a nice swimming pool with a water slide, a good restaurant, boating facilities in a nearby stream, gym, indoor games, indoor badminton court and a tennis court. It was an excellent weekend getaway for the whole family, and so close to our home city, Pune. We would stay at the resort 5 nights every year. We felt as if we had been transported far away from the noisy city and were surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery. We would be woken up by bird calls, in time to witness a golden sunrise. Evening walks into the surrounding countryside was also a pleasant experience. We did not need to plan a long vacation to a faraway destination, thanks to Ganga Retreat Countryside.
But I was in for a rude shock during my last visit.
More than 75% of the open grounds have been given over to the commercial cultural venture called ‘Chokhi Dhani’. Rajasthani folk singers and artistes start sounding their drums and instruments soon after 5 pm, disturbing the peace and harmony of the natural surroundings. The swimming pool has been bone dry for the last year and half. The restaurant was closed. It starts functioning only when it has been hired by a marriage party or a corporate function.
In fact this is what Ganga Retreat Countryside has become now. It is rented out as a venue for conferences and wedding functions, better known as a ‘Mangal Karyalaya’. Overnight stay is arranged in the rooms available for overnight visitors from the wedding functions or from ‘Chokhi Dhani’.
I felt sad that we would not be able to enjoy our weekend getaways at this resort as we used to earlier, due to it becoming a noisy commercialised venture as it is now.

My TripAdvisor Review No.89: Western Ghats, Pune.
“The Hills are Alive.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2015 NEW
The Western Ghats is a mountain range in India, which starts near the border between the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, runs down into Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It ends at the southern tip of India near Kanyakumari. It is also known as the Sahyadri Hills in India. It has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its biological diversity.
There are many hill stations in the Sahyadris where a nature lover and tourist and can stay and enjoy the beauties of nature. There are also many forts located at vantage points on these hills, built by the famous Maratha warrior king Shivaji. Since there is a lot of rainfall on the western side of the hills, there are a good number of wildlife sanctuaries and nature parks too. The climate is cooler than in the plains near the coast. As you travel east into the interiors the land flattens out and is called the ‘Deccan Plateau’.
Pune is a good base to explore many of hill resorts in and around Maharashtra. Pune is also the cultural capital of the state, and is about 160 km from the ‘Maximum City’, Mumbai, to which it is connected by a super-fast expressway.
As you travel along the expressway from Mumbai to Pune, and start the uphill climb on the Ghats (hills) you will feel a perceptible drop in temperature and less humidity in the atmosphere. Soon you will be passing the twin hill towns of Lonavla and Khandala. There are many resorts in both these towns where you can stop and refresh yourselves. This, in fact, is the starting point of your ‘Western Ghats’ experience. If you choose to carry on you will reach Pune within the hour.
From Pune you can branch out in different directions to explore the Sahyadris. In Pune itself you can climb high atop the Sinhagad (Lion) Fort and get a bird’s eye view of Pune district. There are some lakes and dams around Pune where the locals go for a weekend picnic during the monsoons (rainy season). About 60 km from Pune is the newly constructed city of Lavasa. It has been privately developed on the hillsides around a lake. It is a 2 hour drive from Pune.
The highest peak in the Maharashtra Sahyadris is Mt. Kalsubai. It is north of Pune near Bhandardara. This is a place with great natural beauty and worth a visit. It is also near the holy city of Nashik, which is situated on the banks of River Godavari. Igatpuri is another hill station north of Pune.
As you travel south along the Bangalore highway, a right turn off the highway takes you to Wai. From Wai the hill stations of Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar is but a short climb up the picturesque Pasarni Ghat. Both these hill towns are replete with viewing points from where you get grand views of the surrounding hills and valleys. A lot of holiday resorts are located here. Panchgani is 102 km and Mahabaleshwar about 120 km from Pune.
Further south, near Kolhapur, are the lesser known hill resorts of Panhala and Amboli. Amboli is also a stopover point for travellers to the famous beaches of Malvan and Goa.
The best season to explore the Ghats starts with the monsoon rains, when the temperature cools and a mesmerising mist envelops the hillsides. Avid trekkers bring out their gear and start criss-crossing the well trodden paths. Till the middle of March is a good time to explore the Western Ghats, as the scenery remains lush and green, even after the rains stop.

“Wonders of Nature.”

In Maharashtra you have Matheran, Lonavla, Khandala, Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar, Amboli, Panhala and some lesser known places.
In Goa you will find forest resorts around Mollem, near the Karnataka border.
In Karnataka there are resorts in Dandeli, Sirsi, Shivamogga, Agumbe, Chikmagalur, Madikeri, Virajpet and many other towns.
In Tamil Nadu you have the hill resorts of Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal.
In Kerala there are the famous hill towns of Munnar surrounded by tea gardens, and Kumily with its spice plantations.
In addition there are many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. The Dudhsagar waterfall in Goa, the Jog Falls in Karnataka, and the Athirappally falls in Kerala are amongst the most beautiful in India.
The best way to reach these places in the hills is by road, which in most cases is narrow and winding. One has to drive very carefully on the winding gradients. The two main routes starting from Mumbai are the Mumbai-Chennai highway (AH47) and the Mumbai-Ernakulam highway (NH17). The latter travels along the western coast of India and gives you a roller coaster ride over parts of the Western Ghats. There are railway lines too, stopping at the base stations, from where you can connect to the higher reaches by road. There are two hill railways, one going to Matheran and the other to Ooty.
The best season to explore the Sahyadris is between July and March. In the monsoons (July to September) it can rain very heavily and you may be stranded at a place till the rain subsides.
The hill towns and forest sanctuaries are worth exploring if you are a nature lover and wildlife enthusiast.

My TripAdvisor Review No.87: Al Bek Restaurant, Bengaluru.
“Very Good for Kababs and Biryanis.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2015 NEW
Judging by the crowds at this restaurant it seems to be one of the most popular non vegetarian restaurants in R.T. Nagar. On a Sunday it is almost impossible to get a place to sit and eat here. It is better to get it packed and enjoy the food at your leisure later.
Nevertheless, I waited for a table on their mezzanine floor on a Friday night. After 15 minutes of waiting I finally got a table for the three of us. We ordered a full chicken roast with nan and rotis. It took about 20 minutes for the food to be served. It was worth the wait as the preparation was delicious, and we quite enjoyed it. The prices were very reasonable too.
They have very limited seating in the restaurant on the mezzanine floor, and it is quite crowded too. Service is average because the staff have to keep running up and down the narrow wooden staircase. Most people get their order parceled and carry it away.

My TripAdvisor Review No.86: Marleshwar Temple, Sangameshwar.
“Lord Shiva's Secret Cave Temple.”
Reviewed 19 May 2015NEW
Marleshwar is a holy cave temple in the midst of the Sahyadri hills (Western Ghats) in the state of Maharashtra. It is about 19 km from the town of Devrukh in Ratnagiri district. It is deep in the forest, between two hillsides, at the top of one of the hills, with a river flowing in the valley below. One has to trudge up a series of a few hundred steps along the steep hillside. But faith has overcome many obstacles.
It took us about 15 minutes to trudge up the steps from the base of the hill where we had parked our car. There are a number of shops selling snacks, sweets, souvenirs and pooja items (offerings for the gods) lining one side of the stairway all the way from the parking lot to the temple on top. There are hungry monkeys to keep you company, and ready to snatch anything you offer them.
We had to stoop down to enter the narrow opening of the cave temple. It was cool and dark and smoky inside. The priest inside helped us to perform the pooja (prayers) and accepted our offerings. There are supposed to be live snakes inside, but we did not see any. There were some idols of Lord Shiva protected by the symbolic brass snakes though. After taking the Lord’s blessings we stepped outside again. Even though it was March there was still a flow of water from the waterfall nearby. Indeed it must be a beautiful sight to witness this waterfall in full flow during the monsoon months.
On the way down we picked up a snack of hot ‘wada paos’, before heading back through the green countryside, as the sun was setting. We noticed a pair of hornbill birds flying home to their nest as we were driving back to Devrukh.

My TripAdvisor Review No.85: O'Nest Home Stay, Devrukh, Sangameshwar.
“Experience Life in a Konkani Hamlet.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW
We discovered this quaint home stay through TripAdvisor, and decided to spend a couple of nights here on our return trip from Goa to Pune. It is located off the main Panjim-Panvel highway (NH17). After passing Lanja we had to take a right turn at Dabhole to reach Sakharpa. At Sakharpa you have to turn left and drive for another 16 km to reach Devrukh, the small Konkani town where O’Nest is located. Abhijit, the manager, guided us from Dabhole.
We had a glass of chilled mango milkshake and were immediately refreshed. The place is beautifully laid out in a grove of mango, banana, betel nut, coconut and other fruit trees, and you get the feeling of living on a farm. There are some decorative bullock cart wheels, and weaver bird nests to welcome you. There is an open air restaurant made with bamboo and other natural building materials. Besides the regular a/c and non a/c rooms, there is also a tree house where one family can be accommodated.
The dense canopy of trees attracts a variety of birds. The owner has put up a chart of all the birds which can be observed in the nearby areas. One can climb up onto the bird watching machan early in the morning to get a close up of the different birds at close quarters.
We had a mini veg thali for dinner at their gazebo restaurant. It consisted of one vegetable, dal, salad, pickle, chapatti, rice and papad, and a glass of buttermilk. One can also order a la carte dishes after giving them sufficient notice. Next day we had a very tasty ‘Upma’ for breakfast. The kitchen is well looked after by Mr. Suresh. There are no other restaurants nearby within walking distance.
Devrukh town is a nice hamlet and we saw beautiful bungalows and cottages on our morning walks. There was a cashew farm and processing unit nearby. We visited the ‘Swami Samarth Math’ which is a place of worship, and it had a very beautiful garden, about half a km from the home stay. The Marleshwar cave temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a 16 km drive from O’Nest. Besides, one can also make this a base to visit Ratnagiri, Pavas and Ganpatipule.
We would certainly like to visit O’Nest again, just to have a get away from the noise and bustle of the big city and enjoy a few days in the peace and tranquillity of this charming rural home stay.
Room Tip: There is one tree house room, for an unique experience of living in a nest.

My TripAdvisor Review No.84: Jyotiba Royale Retreat, Jyotiba Dongar, Kolhapur.
“A Royal Retreat.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW
We were looking for a place to stop for the night en route to Pune from Goa. It had to be near Kolhapur, as we wanted to visit the famous Mahalaxmi Temple, but we did not want to stay in the city itself. Finally we found this imposing property at the top of a wooded hill near the Jyotiba Temple, about 20 km from Kolhapur. It is just a stone’s throw from the Jyotiba Temple and ST bus stand.
As you enter the gates you get the feeling that you are entering a Rajasthani Maharaja’s Palace. There is a board at the gates saying that this is the ‘Jyotiba Royale’ operated by the state owned MTDC. The building structure is very imposing, and there is huge compound with some flowering shrubs and garden plants and trees and greenery all around. And the views from the grounds are fantastic, to say the least. Being at the top of a hill, also known as the ‘Jyotiba Dongar’, you get a panoramic view of the hills and valleys around Kolhapur.
Being a week day there were plenty of rooms available, with room tariffs ranging between Rs.850 to Rs.1200 (taxes extra). All the rooms were non ac, with basic amenities, but very neat and clean. We selected a deluxe corner room on the first floor which had two balconies looking out in two directions. At night we sat outside in the balcony and enjoyed the fabulous views of the valley with twinkling lights, and stars in the sky. There was a cool breeze blowing, even though it had been a hot summer day.
They have a restaurant where we had our lunch and dinner. It is a nice restaurant with an open-air sit out. You get the basic Indian vegetable curries, chapattis, dal, rice, soft drinks and a few sweet dishes. We ordered the veg thali for lunch, which was served in a jiffy. We also tried their ‘Sol Kadi’ drink which was quite good. We also had our dinner and next day’s breakfast here, since there are not many other restaurants nearby. They served a good ‘poha’ for breakfast.
When there was a power outage in the afternoon we had to open our balcony doors for ventilation. There is no generator backup. The furniture and bathroom fittings are in need of some maintenance. However, the location of this hotel with its fabulous views, and the peace, greenery and serenity all around, more than made up for the lack of some of the amenities.
Jyotiba Royale would be a place worth visiting during the monsoon and winter months.
Room Tip: First floor rooms have better views, corner rooms are slightly bigger.

My TripAdvisor Review No.83: Dona Paula Beach, Panjim, Goa.
“Good View Point for Sunrise and Sunset.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2015 NEW
Dona Paula is a rocky headland jutting out into the Arabian Sea, overlooking the Marmugao Harbour. It lies in between the Zuari and Mandovi River estuaries, and is about 7 km south of Panjim.
There are a lot of myths and stories of a Portuguese lady by the name of Dona Paula who lived here in the 17th century. It is also believed to be haunted by her spirit, which emerges from the waves on moonlit nights, wearing only a pearl necklace.
It must be one of the most visited spots in Panjim. If you go there in the evenings during peak tourist season you would find it crawling with visitors admiring the views from the top of a small hillock which has a Greco-Roman type of viewing platform. There is white sculpted statue of two figures at the base of this hillock called ‘Images of India’.
There is a regular Dona Paula – Marmugao Harbour ferry which takes you across the bay. Water sports facilities are also available during the tourist season.
I happened to visit Dona Paula during my morning walk as I was staying at Cidade de Goa, about 2 km away. It was very calm and serene at this time and an excellent place to view sunrise. It must be amongst the very few places in Goa where you can witness the sun rising over the Arabian Sea.

My TripAdvisor Review No.82: Caculo Mall, Panjim, Goa.
“One Stop Shopping in a Panjim Mall”
Reviewed 10 May 2015 NEW
Caculo Mall is a decent mid size
mall on St. Inez Road, near Campal, in Panjim. There is parking space for about
8 to 10 cars near the entrance, which may be insufficient if it becomes more
popular and gets more crowded. The road is also quite narrow and one has to be
very careful while parking.
You can shop here in air-conditioned comfort, which can be quite a blessing in the humid climate of Goa. There are many branded clothing and fashion accessories stores, sports and toy shops. In addition there is a Food Court and a Bowling Alley for some entertainment, but no multiplex. Washrooms are reasonably clean.
We bought some groceries and Goan cashews from the ‘Magsons Supermarket’. I also bought a Paulo Coelho book as a souvenir of our visit to Goa, from the ‘Broadway Book Centre’.

My TripAdvisor Review No.81: Vainguinim Beach, Panjim, Goa.
“Secluded, Almost Private Beach.”
Reviewed 9 May 2015 NEW
Vainguinim Beach is located about 2
km from Dona Paula, and about 6km from Panjim, overlooking the Mormugao Bay and
harbour. It is a small crescent shaped strip of brown sand about half a km
long, and is almost like a private beach for the Cidade de Goa and Sandalwood
Hotels. It is lined with tall coconut trees along the shoreline which make it
look very beautiful.
Being away from Panjim city and by virtue of its seclusion, there are no beach shacks here and hardly any crowds, except for guests from the resorts. Sometimes you may get to witness some beach parties here, because of the weddings or other functions held at the resorts. The resort guests get to relax on the deck chairs in relative peace and solitude. There are some water sports activities available, and the beach is quite safe for swimming too.
The beach is kept clean by the resort employees. This is an excellent beach to quietly relax and witness the sunsets.
