“Experience Life in a Konkani Hamlet.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW
We discovered this quaint home stay through TripAdvisor, and decided to spend a couple of nights here on our return trip from Goa to Pune. It is located off the main Panjim-Panvel highway (NH17). After passing Lanja we had to take a right turn at Dabhole to reach Sakharpa. At Sakharpa you have to turn left and drive for another 16 km to reach Devrukh, the small Konkani town where O’Nest is located. Abhijit, the manager, guided us from Dabhole.
We had a glass of chilled mango milkshake and were immediately refreshed. The place is beautifully laid out in a grove of mango, banana, betel nut, coconut and other fruit trees, and you get the feeling of living on a farm. There are some decorative bullock cart wheels, and weaver bird nests to welcome you. There is an open air restaurant made with bamboo and other natural building materials. Besides the regular a/c and non a/c rooms, there is also a tree house where one family can be accommodated.
The dense canopy of trees attracts a variety of birds. The owner has put up a chart of all the birds which can be observed in the nearby areas. One can climb up onto the bird watching machan early in the morning to get a close up of the different birds at close quarters.
We had a mini veg thali for dinner at their gazebo restaurant. It consisted of one vegetable, dal, salad, pickle, chapatti, rice and papad, and a glass of buttermilk. One can also order a la carte dishes after giving them sufficient notice. Next day we had a very tasty ‘Upma’ for breakfast. The kitchen is well looked after by Mr. Suresh. There are no other restaurants nearby within walking distance.
Devrukh town is a nice hamlet and we saw beautiful bungalows and cottages on our morning walks. There was a cashew farm and processing unit nearby. We visited the ‘Swami Samarth Math’ which is a place of worship, and it had a very beautiful garden, about half a km from the home stay. The Marleshwar cave temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a 16 km drive from O’Nest. Besides, one can also make this a base to visit Ratnagiri, Pavas and Ganpatipule.
We would certainly like to visit O’Nest again, just to have a get away from the noise and bustle of the big city and enjoy a few days in the peace and tranquillity of this charming rural home stay.
Room Tip: There is one tree house room, for an unique experience of living in a nest.
