My TripAdvisor Review No.659: Glenary's Bakery & Cafe, Darjeeling.

Excellent Bakery & Restaurant, But Indifferent Service.

Glenary’s Bakery and Restaurant is one of the prominent eateries of Darjeeling and has been in existence since pre Independence days. It is located in a large white painted two storied heritage building on Nehru Road very close to the Chowrasta Mall. The bakery is on the ground floor, the restaurant is on the first floor and there is a pub in the basement.

We first visited the restaurant for lunch. The dining hall was quite large and decorated very well with antique furnishings and had a nice old world charm about it. There was a huge fireplace at one end of the room. There was an outdoor seating area with a grand view overlooking the hill town and the mountains. We ordered Paneer Pakodas as starters, Chicken Kofta Curry with rice and American Chop Suey. The food was very tasty and hygienic. Prices were reasonable but the service was a bit lethargic.

Later we went down to the bakery and had their Blueberry cake which was excellent. There was a nice seating area and an open air sit-out with a good view here as well. There were nice picture frames and artifacts decorating the walls and the ambience was very uplifting.

Later we decided to pick up some take-away items at the bakery. We placed an order for Patties, Buns, Muffins, Scones and a Quiche with the counter staff who were busy gossiping among themselves. Billing was done by one of them and packing by some other girl. When we opened the package at our hotel we found that one item was missing, and it was a bit late to go back to recover it.

The indifferent service marred our good experience at Glenary’s. I guess we will have to be more attentive and wary if we visit again.

My TripAdvisor Review No.554: Bear's Paw Bakery, Jasper, Canada.

Very Popular Bakery Of Jasper.

Being located just next door to the Jasper Downtown Hostel we went to Bear’s Paw Bakery after leaving our luggage at the hostel. We thought we would get some muffins or burgers for brunch around noon. But most of the savory items seemed to be over and we got to try some cheesecake and a spicy sausage roll. We ordered some latte coffee too. The taste was OK but nothing exceptional.

Next morning we thought we would go down for an early breakfast, but there was already a long queue of people waiting their turn. The bakery seems to be quite popular in Jasper and is always crowded. They serve quite a good variety of items like croissants, buns, muffins, pastries, cakes, scones and a variety of coffees and hot chocolate. They have very limited seating inside and most tourists prefer to take-away.

My TripAdvisor Review No.548: Barako Cafe & Gifts, Jasper Railway Station, Alberta, Canada.

Brunch At Jasper Station.

Our train ‘The Skeena’ to Prince George was delayed by over an hour so we were waiting in the Jasper Station Lounge and beginning to feel hungry. The complimentary coffee and cookies provided by VIA Rail was not enough to keep the hunger pangs at bay.

We found this nice café and gift shop in the annex of the railway station. I ordered ham and cheese sandwiches and some coffee with latte and cream. It took them a while to prepare and I was wondering why. When I was served I found the sandwiches really hot and tasty, and the coffee was also exceptional. Full marks to them for providing freshly prepared stuff. They have some chairs and tables to sit and eat near the café and out on the platform, but we carried our brunch to the lounge where we had occupied seats next to our luggage.

There are some gift items and memorabilia also which they have on display, like picture post cards, coins, key-chains and bookmarks which we were almost tempted to buy.

My TripAdvisor Review No.509: Cafe Guido, Port Hardy, Vanc-Island, Canada.

Good For Coffee.

Café Guido is located in downtown Port Hardy opposite the Port Hardy Museum. It is a good café for coffee but there was not much to choose from in the Vegan or Vegetarian breakfast options. Most of the paninis, pizzas and quiches were non vegetarian. The only vegetarian breakfast option I could find was a Sienna, which was a cheese sandwich with some chopped vegetables in it. I also tried the Apple Cake and it was OK. Prices were on the high side.

However, they have a nice bookshop in the basement with a good collection of books related to the local history, geography and culture of Vancouver Island. Gift items were also available.

My TripAdvisor Review No.460: Della's Cafe, Port Alberni, Canada.

Refreshing Cafe On The Highway To Tofino.

Dellas Café is a nice pit stop on the highway from Nanaimo to Tofino at Port Alberni. One can stop here for some snacks and coffee while driving down either way. It is located about halfway between both Nanaimo and Tofino, right next to the Sproat Lake Landing Resort just outside Port Alberni.

We had some tasty Indian Samosas with Vegan and Tandoori Chicken fillings served with a piquant pickle. Other items on the menu included cakes, pastries, ice creams, cold drinks, a variety of coffees and hot chocolate.

Some cute little gift items are also available to carry as souvenirs for friends and family.

There is a nice lawn with some colourful tables and chairs and one can sit out in the open and relax for a while next to the lake. Kids can exercise their legs and the parents can stretch their limbs before driving on.
