My TripAdvisor Review No.491: VIA Rail, Canada.

Great Way To Explore Canada.

We opted for the VIA Rail to explore and sight-see the western part of Canada. We took ‘The Canadian’ from Vancouver to Jasper and ‘The Skeena’ from Jasper to Prince Rupert. We travelled Economy and had to spend one night sleeping in our comfortable reclining seats since the Vancouver to Jasper section is an overnight journey. For the Jasper to Prince Rupert section the train stops overnight at Prince George, so we had to book a room at Prince George for the night. Though it may sound a very tedious way to travel, most of the travellers on the train seemed to be enjoying the trip.

Our Economy Class seats were very comfortable with lots of leg room. Of course one can also choose to travel in the higher class like Sleeper Plus and Prestige Class by paying a higher fare which also includes buffet meals and drinks served on the train. For the economy class, meals and snacks have to be purchased separately from the train kitchen. Some passengers opted to bring their own packed sandwiches and snacks.

There train staff were friendly and ever helpful. They would also periodically inform us about the route and stations we were passing, as well as the main attractions and points of interest along the way. Wildlife spotting was high on everyone’s agenda and we did spot a couple of bears, some deer and elk along the route. The snow covered mountain peaks and fast flowing rivers always kept our gaze riveted out the large windows during the day. We had access to the Dome Car on The Canadian.

One of the most controversial aspects of this way of travelling was that the VIA Rail trains were given lower priority than the freight trains, and we would have to stop at a siding quite often to let the freight trains pass, sometimes for as long as an hour. But this gave us and opportunity, with the engineer’s permission, to get off the train and stretch our legs and explore the countryside at ground level. As a results the trains, especially the ‘Skeena’ could never stick to their schedules. We had to check in to our Prince George hotel once at 11 pm, and beyond midnight on the return trip.

Surprisingly, our train back to Vancouver arrived more than two hours ahead of schedule, and the engineer apologized to the passengers for being early!

On the whole we quite enjoyed our to and fro rail trip from Vancouver to Prince Rupert through the mighty Rocky Mountains of British Columbia and Alberta.

My TripAdvisor Review No.451: Alpha Restaurant, Secunderabad.

Located Near Railway Junction.

We decided to have lunch at this restaurant as it was located bang opposite the Secunderabad Junction Railway Station, and we had to catch the afternoon train to Pune.

The air-conditioned family section, named ‘Alps’, is ironically located underground. We had to go down a narrow flight of steps with our luggage. We found a table next to the standing air-conditioner, as the rest of the tables were not getting the cooling effect. The lighting was quite dim, though they do not serve alcohol.

We ordered a Vegetarian Dum Biryani, a Dal Fry, and a Roti. Food was quite tasty and the quantity was good. However the service was a bit slow and the waiter somewhat reluctant to serve us, maybe because we had not ordered the more popular non-vegetarian biryanis.

The prices were very reasonable, considering the sizeable portions served. We had our fill, satisfied with the food, but not with the ambiance and the service.

My TripAdvisor Review No.269: Heritage Train, Coonoor.

Better Than A Roller-Coaster Ride.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is a metre gauge toy train which snakes its way up the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu, South India, from Mettupalayam at the base to Udagamandalam (Ooty) at the top of the hills. The NMR has now been added to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mountain Railways of India.

Coonoor Station is situated between Mettupalayam and Ooty. If you are staying in Coonoor you can travel in either direction, but there is a different type of engine for both. From Mettupalayam to Coonoor there is an oil fired steam locomotive, and for Coonoor to Ooty there is a diesel locomotive. The steam train is of course a better alternative for a joy ride, but if you want to enjoy a shorter ride then do the trip from Coonoor to Ooty.

We purchased the general class tickets which cost only Rs.10 to go from Coonoor to Ooty. There was an orderly queue to get in to the compartment. The early birds get the prime window seats. The train departed at 4 pm and reached Ooty at 5.15 pm. Tickets can also be booked on the IRCTC website in advance.

We enjoyed the mountain scenery along the way, passing through a number of tunnels and over some narrow bridges. In between we halted for a few minutes at some quaint stations like Wellington, Aravankadu, Ketti and Lovedale.

My TripAdvisor Review No.268: Sim's Park, Coonoor.

Enchanting.

Sim’s Park in Coonoor is definitely worth a visit. Even though it is smaller than the Botanical Garden of Ooty, it is better laid out at different levels on a sloping hillside. There is a small lake where one can do some boating.

There is an entry fee of Rs.30 per head and a camera fee of Rs.50. The park is very scenic and one can take many enchanting photographs. Parking is available on the street outside, as well as an auto-rickshaw stand where one can get ‘tuk-tuks’ on hire. The tuk-tuks charge about Rs.140 for a round trip from the Railway Station.

We saw some very exotic trees from faraway lands like Australia, Brazil and Europe. There are colourful flower beds, lawns, rockeries as well as a rose garden. We also saw some rare species of trees like Rudraksh, Ferns, Camellia, Auraucaria, Oak, Eucalyptus, Acacia, Pines and more. Most of the trees are marked with their name boards and which country they are commonly found in.

There are clean washrooms in the park, and some restaurants outside. Be prepared to do some walking though, first downhill and then uphill to get back to the gates.

My TripAdvisor Review No.228: Kalka Shimla Railway, Himachal.

“Heritage Toy Train - An Amazing Experience.”
Reviewed yesterday
NEW
This narrow gauge train connects the hill town of Shimla, capital of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, to Kalka in the plains in the state of Haryana. The line was built by the British in the year 1898 and it acquired UNESCO World Heritage status in the year 2008, among the Mountain Railways of India. There are 103 tunnels and 864 bridges along the 95 km route. It takes between 4.5 to 5.5 hours for the small diesel locomotive to haul the 4 or 5 carriages up the Himalayan foothills, hugging the forested slopes.

We were staying at Kandaghat during our Himachal holiday. Though we did not actually travel in the train we decided to receive the train at Kandaghat station, and take some snaps, as it rolled into the platform. We could hear the train approaching from a distance along the curved railway line. Kids, waiting for the train on the platform for the train, started getting excited and jumping for joy as the train entered the platform. We took our snaps as the loco thundered into the station. The snack vendors and railway staff sprang to life as some passengers alighted to refresh themselves. One can travel on this train from the mid-way stations to other stations on the line by buying a ticket for Rs.20. The luxury trains, like Himalayan Queen, Shivalik Queen and Rail Motor from Kalka to Shimla, and vice-versa, can be reserved in advance.

The train left for Shimla after a 10 minute halt at Kandaghat. We stayed on the platform observing the activities as some passengers alighted and some others boarded the train. Most of them enjoyed a snack or a cup of hot tea and clambered back into their seats.

The Toy Train ride is an amazing experience as it climbs from the plains to the snow-capped peaks, through tunnels and pine forests, and over and under waterfalls. We decided to do the trip in the train on our next visit to Himachal Pradesh.

My TripAdvisor Review No.146: Sutarwadi Lake, Kolad, Raigad District.

“Beautiful Lake surrounded by Green Hills.”
4 of 5 starsReviewed 3 days agoNEW
Sutarwadi Lake and Dam is a calm and serene water body ringed by emerald green hills of the Sahyadris all around it. It is located in the village of Kolad in the Konkan region of Maharashtra.

There are a number of farms and resorts surrounding the Sutarwadi Lake. One can stay at one of these resorts for a few days and enjoy a quiet getaway from the city life, observing the bird life and serenity around the lake.

The Kundalika River, famous for white water rafting expeditions and camps, is nearby. One can combine the adrenaline rush of white water rafting with a soothing stay next to the Sutarwadi Lake.

The best time to visit Kolad is during the monsoons, between July and September.

My TripAdvisor Review No.124: 'Konkan Spice' at The Fern Courtyard Resort, Ganpatipule.

“Good Multicuisine Restaurant.”
4 of 5 starsReviewed 20 September 2015NEW
Konkan Spice is a good multicuisine restaurant serving Indian, Tandoori and Oriental dishes. We decided to try it out when we were staying at The Fern Courtyard Resort where this restaurant is located.

We ordered Russian Salad and Chicken Biryani. The Russian salad was so-so, but the chicken biryani, served with cucumber raitha, was delicious. Portion size was generous and quite filling for the two of us.

The service was efficient and courteous. We quite enjoyed our dinner.

My TripAdvisor Review No.103: Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Bengaluru.

“A Beautiful Garden of the Garden City.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2015 NEW

Lalbagh Botanical Garden is one of the main tourist attractions of Bangalore. It is located in the heart of the city in the beautiful residential area of Jayanagar. The garden is accessible through four gates, but vehicles are allowed in only through the East gate. There is ample parking space if you enter through this gate. Vehicular movement inside the garden is restricted.

The garden is of royal origin, and designed in the Mughal style. It was started initially by Hyder Ali in 1760, and further developed by his son Tipu Sultan, and later by the British. It now covers an area of 240 acres.

The garden has a very scenic layout. It has over 1000 species of flora, and has some giant trees which are over a 100 years old. The garden is aesthetically designed with lawns, flower beds, lotus pools and fountains. In one of the lawns is a lawn clock, the first such clock in India, surrounded by fairy-tale characters.

In the center of the garden is a glass house, designed on the lines of the Crystal Palace of England. The famous flower shows of Bangalore are held in this glass house.

At the end of the garden is the Lalbagh Lake. One has to climb a few steps to get a panoramic view of this beautiful lake. There are well laid out pathways and tracks inside the park, and one can visit Lalbagh gardens for a morning or evening walk. The timings of the garden is from 6 am to 7 pm and it is open on all days.

My TripAdvisor Review No.100: Kollam Beach, Kollam, Kerala.

“OK for an evening walk.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2015 NEW

Kollam beach is about a km from the Kollam Railway Station. It is a 2 km long stretch of brown sand, but not very clean. There is a children's park adjacent to the beach which has a giant white statue of a mermaid.

Swimming is prohibited on the beach because of the dangerous undercurrents, and a few people are said to have drowned in the sea here.

There are a number of snack food stalls lining the beach and the local people and tourists generally come to this beach in the evenings for a snack, a stroll or to enjoy a beautiful view of the sunset. Children can enjoy an outing in the nearby park. There is ample parking space for vehicles adjacent to the beach and rickshaws are also easily available.

The Thangassery Lighthouse is just barely visible about 2 km north of Kollam Beach.

My TripAdvisor Review No.98: Varkala Beach, Kerala

“Beach with a Cliff View!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2015 NEW

We stopped at Varkala Beach for lunch en route Trivandrum to Kollam. It is about 50 km north of Trivandrum.

There are a lot of restaurants on the main Papanasam (wash away sins) Beach. We chose a double decker restaurant and had our lunch on the top deck. We enjoyed the sea view as much as the sea food at the restaurant. Just behind the restaurant there were steps leading up to the cliffs which gives Varkala Beach it's special scenic beauty. There are a lot of hotels on the cliff top where one can spend a longer vacation. There is even a helipad on top.

The Sree Janardhana Swami Temple and the Sivagiri Mutt are two well known religious places located near Varkala, but we did not have time to visit.

Varkala beach is comparable to some of the better beaches of Goa for it's raw natural beauty. We would certainly like to spend a few more days here on our next Kerala holiday.

My TripAdvisor Review No.97: Thiruvanathapuram Zoo.

“One of the Best Zoos in India.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2015 NEW

We had wanted to visit this zoo ever since we saw the movie, ‘The Life of Pi’. The movie is based on the Booker Prize winning novel with the same title authored by Yann Martel. The Canadian author’s story is based on his research he had done on the animal behaviours during his visits to this zoo in 1996-97.

Founded by the Maharaja of Travancore in 1857, it is the oldest zoo in India. It is set in a rambling 55 acre botanical garden in the centre of Thiruvanathapuram, and is located in the same compound as the Napier Museum and Sri Chitra Art Gallery. There is a nominal entry fee per person, but camera charges were Rs.50. The timings are 10 am to 5 pm on all days, but closed on Mondays.

If one wants to explore the entire zoo on foot, then be prepared to spend at least two hours of walking around the natural surroundings of jungles, lakes and gardens around which the cages and enclosures are set. The zoo authorities have tried to keep all the animals in a natural environment, though it was not possible to eliminate cages altogether. Golf carts are also available for those who are not able to spend so much time and effort to walk around.

All in all it is a good experience for children and adults who are fond of wildlife and nature. You can click snaps of the animals as if they are in their natural habitats, if you have camera with a good zoom.

My TripAdvisor Review No.96: Kovalam Beach, Trivandrum, Kerala.

“Beautiful but commercialised.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2015 NEW

Kovalam is a well known beach town located about 16 km from Kerala's capital city, Trivandrum. We hired a cab to drive down to the beach as part of the sight seeing trip around Trivandrum.

The 17 km long crescent shaped beach is actually broken up into 3 parts by rocky outcroppings. These 3 parts are called 1) Lighthouse Beach, 2) Hawah Beach and 3) Samudra Beach. All along the shoreline is fringed with beautiful cocont trees.

Our cab driver took us to the central Hawah Beach which is somewhat more crowded, and full of restaurants, hotels and water sports activities. We could see the Vizhinjam Lighthouse from here, but the Samudra Beach in the north was not visible. There is a different route to the Samudra Beach and all the 5 star resorts of Kovalam are located on this side. So Samudra Beach is more like a private beach.

Compared to the beaches of Goa and Maharashtra I would say Kovalam Beach is average, since it has been so commercialised. Maybe if we had come here in the evening and witnessed a sunset I might have rated it higher on the beauty scale.

My TripAdvisor Review No.95: Poovar Island, Trivandrum, Kerala.

“Remote Tropical Paradise.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2015 NEW

Poovar island is located in the extreme southern tip of the state of Kerala. It is about 35 km south west from Trivandrum towards the Arabian Sea. Here the Neyyar River flowing down from the Agastyamala Hills comes and meets the Arabian Sea, forming a beautiful estuary, surrounded by mangrove forests.

The best way to explore Poovar Island is by boat. The boatman will take you through the mangrove forests to the Neyyar River and then downriver towards the sea. The river then runs almost parallel to the sea, separated only by a sand bank which forms part of the island. You can take a walk on the beach formed by the sand bank, but it is quite dangerous to swim here, as the sea is very rough.

There are a number of high end resorts located at or near Poovar Island. Some of these are, 'Isola Di Coco', 'Estuary Island', and 'Poovar Island Resort'. You will also find some floating restaurants along the Neyyar River where you can enjoy a meal in a tropical setting next to the flowing river.

My TripAdvisor Review No.93: Poovar Backwater Cruise, Poovar, Trivandrum, Kerala.

“Fascinating Backwater Boat Ride.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2015 NEW

Early one morning we were walking along to Virali village, near Poovar, for breakfast when we noticed these colourful fibre glass boats parked on the banks of the river. The boatman offered us a ride through the backwater canals and even agreed to wait while we had breakfast at a riverside restaurant.

We were not expecting much, but it turned out to be a very fascinating boat ride indeed. As we entered the mangrove forests the foliage from the overhanging branches closed in on us. The boatman slowed down the speed of the boat so that the motor made less noise and we were silently gliding through the mangroves. We saw many water birds at close quarters. There were egrets, kingfishers, cormorants, cranes, eagles and some other bird species which we couldn’t identify.

We passed some resorts like ‘Isoly di Coco’, ‘Estuary Resort’, and ‘Poovar Island Resort’ in the backwaters. Some of them even have floating cottages on the river bank.

After some time we reached the much wider Neyyar River and now he increased the boat speed till we reached the riverside restaurant named ‘Anna Boorna’, where we had a breakfast of dosas and uthappas. It was an open air shack overlooking the river and had a beautiful setting. There are some other floating restaurants too, along the riverside.

We then got back into the boat and went to the estuary where the river enters the sea. There was a sand bank beyond which is the Arabian Sea. We stopped and climbed on to the sand bank and got our feet wet in the sea water. The slope of the beach is steep and it is not safe to swim here, as the waves are quite rough.

It was indeed a fascinating and unique boat ride experience, not to be missed if you are visiting this southernmost tip of Kerala, near Trivandrum.

My TripAdvisor Review No.92: Morgaon Mayureshwar Ganpati Temple.

“First Among the Swayambhu Ganpatis.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2015 NEW

This Ganpati temple at Morgaon near Pune has one of the eight Swayambhu (self formed, not made by man) Ganpati idols in the state of Maharashtra. The devotees who do the AshtaVinayak yatra, or pilgrimage of the eight Swayambhus always start at this temple, and end the yatra also at this temple.

The temple is made of black stone and is surrounded by a high wall. As you enter you are greeted by an idol of the Nandi Bull. There is also an idol of his vehicle, the mouse, enclosed in a glass case, and a large deepa stambha (pillar for lamps). As you enter the inner sanctum you will see the idols of two huge peacocks above the door. The name 'Mayureshwar Ganpati' has been derived from the peacocks which used to inhabit Morgaon village. The vermilion coloured Ganpati idol sits regally in the sanctum, silently blessing his devotees.

Decorum is maintained in the temple by the pujaris, and despite the large crowds we were able to get Lord Ganeshas blessings in half an hour. Outside the temple there are numerous stalls selling offerings, as well as restaurants where you can buy a decent vegetarian meal. Parking lot for vehicles is about 300 meters away from the temple.

Morgaon is about 80 km from Pune city. Take NH9 (Pune Sholapur highway) past Hadapsar, Loni, Uruli Kancahn, Yevat, till you reach Chaufula. At Chaufula you have to turn right to get on to the Ahmednagar Satara highway, and go past Supa till you reach Morgaon.

My TripAdvisor Review No.91: Kapila Resort, Wagholi, Pune.

“A Green Retreat near Pune City.”
4 of 5 starsReviewed 2 days ago NEW
This Resort is just 15 km. from the city of Pune, but once you reach there it is as if you have traveled far away from the noise and bustle of the city. It is located just outside the city limits at Wagholi. As you travel down towards Ahmednagar on the Pune-Nagar Road, about 3 km after passing the Mundhwa crossing, you will see a sign board of 'Choki Dhani' on the right. Take a U-turn and go down this lane for about 2 km till you reach the gates of 'Dhole Patil College' and enter the resort.

The rooms are located at the end of the lane on the right. They are well furnished and have ac and a balcony with a sit-out. The grounds are clean and green, and there is a small lake with an island in the centre. They also have a conference hall, amphitheatre, party lawns, and a multi-cuisine restaurant and bar.

We did not spend the night at the resort, but we had lunch at their restaurant, and quite enjoyed the open air ambiance of the restaurant. The restaurant is open from all sides and they don't have an ac section, but being open from all sides there is a cool breeze at all times.

Their tandoori dishes are excellent. We ordered a platter of 'Mila Jula Kebabs' with nan, roti, onion salad, and green mint chutney. The meat was succulent and well marinated and we liked the different tastes of the variety of kebabs.

There is sufficient parking around the restaurant and near the rooms at the resort.

My TripAdvisor Review No.90; Ganga Retreat Countryside, Pune.

“From Bad to Worse.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

We had been staying at this resort for many years, ever since we became members. In the beginning they had a very nice ambience, cool green lawns, a nice swimming pool with a water slide, a good restaurant, boating facilities in a nearby stream, gym, indoor games, indoor badminton court and a tennis court. It was an excellent weekend getaway for the whole family, and so close to our home city, Pune. We would stay at the resort 5 nights every year. We felt as if we had been transported far away from the noisy city and were surrounded by beautiful trees and greenery. We would be woken up by bird calls, in time to witness a golden sunrise. Evening walks into the surrounding countryside was also a pleasant experience. We did not need to plan a long vacation to a faraway destination, thanks to Ganga Retreat Countryside.

But I was in for a rude shock during my last visit.

More than 75% of the open grounds have been given over to the commercial cultural venture called ‘Chokhi Dhani’. Rajasthani folk singers and artistes start sounding their drums and instruments soon after 5 pm, disturbing the peace and harmony of the natural surroundings. The swimming pool has been bone dry for the last year and half. The restaurant was closed. It starts functioning only when it has been hired by a marriage party or a corporate function.

In fact this is what Ganga Retreat Countryside has become now. It is rented out as a venue for conferences and wedding functions, better known as a ‘Mangal Karyalaya’. Overnight stay is arranged in the rooms available for overnight visitors from the wedding functions or from ‘Chokhi Dhani’.

I felt sad that we would not be able to enjoy our weekend getaways at this resort as we used to earlier, due to it becoming a noisy commercialised venture as it is now.

My TripAdvisor Review No.89: Western Ghats, Pune.

“The Hills are Alive.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2015 NEW

The Western Ghats is a mountain range in India, which starts near the border between the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, runs down into Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It ends at the southern tip of India near Kanyakumari. It is also known as the Sahyadri Hills in India. It has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its biological diversity.

There are many hill stations in the Sahyadris where a nature lover and tourist and can stay and enjoy the beauties of nature. There are also many forts located at vantage points on these hills, built by the famous Maratha warrior king Shivaji. Since there is a lot of rainfall on the western side of the hills, there are a good number of wildlife sanctuaries and nature parks too. The climate is cooler than in the plains near the coast. As you travel east into the interiors the land flattens out and is called the ‘Deccan Plateau’.

Pune is a good base to explore many of hill resorts in and around Maharashtra. Pune is also the cultural capital of the state, and is about 160 km from the ‘Maximum City’, Mumbai, to which it is connected by a super-fast expressway.

As you travel along the expressway from Mumbai to Pune, and start the uphill climb on the Ghats (hills) you will feel a perceptible drop in temperature and less humidity in the atmosphere. Soon you will be passing the twin hill towns of Lonavla and Khandala. There are many resorts in both these towns where you can stop and refresh yourselves. This, in fact, is the starting point of your ‘Western Ghats’ experience. If you choose to carry on you will reach Pune within the hour.

From Pune you can branch out in different directions to explore the Sahyadris. In Pune itself you can climb high atop the Sinhagad (Lion) Fort and get a bird’s eye view of Pune district. There are some lakes and dams around Pune where the locals go for a weekend picnic during the monsoons (rainy season). About 60 km from Pune is the newly constructed city of Lavasa. It has been privately developed on the hillsides around a lake. It is a 2 hour drive from Pune.

The highest peak in the Maharashtra Sahyadris is Mt. Kalsubai. It is north of Pune near Bhandardara. This is a place with great natural beauty and worth a visit. It is also near the holy city of Nashik, which is situated on the banks of River Godavari. Igatpuri is another hill station north of Pune.

As you travel south along the Bangalore highway, a right turn off the highway takes you to Wai. From Wai the hill stations of Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar is but a short climb up the picturesque Pasarni Ghat. Both these hill towns are replete with viewing points from where you get grand views of the surrounding hills and valleys. A lot of holiday resorts are located here. Panchgani is 102 km and Mahabaleshwar about 120 km from Pune.

Further south, near Kolhapur, are the lesser known hill resorts of Panhala and Amboli. Amboli is also a stopover point for travellers to the famous beaches of Malvan and Goa.

The best season to explore the Ghats starts with the monsoon rains, when the temperature cools and a mesmerising mist envelops the hillsides. Avid trekkers bring out their gear and start criss-crossing the well trodden paths. Till the middle of March is a good time to explore the Western Ghats, as the scenery remains lush and green, even after the rains stop.

My TripAdvisor Review No.88: Western Ghats, India.

“Wonders of Nature.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2015 NEW

The Western Ghats is a mountain range in India, which starts near the border between the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, runs down into Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It ends at the southern tip of India near Kanyakumari. It is also known as the Sahyadri Hills in India. It has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its biological diversity.

There are many hill stations in the Sahyadris where a nature lover and tourist and can stay and enjoy the beauties of nature.

In Maharashtra you have Matheran, Lonavla, Khandala, Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar, Amboli, Panhala and some lesser known places.

In Goa you will find forest resorts around Mollem, near the Karnataka border.

In Karnataka there are resorts in Dandeli, Sirsi, Shivamogga, Agumbe, Chikmagalur, Madikeri, Virajpet and many other towns.

In Tamil Nadu you have the hill resorts of Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal.

In Kerala there are the famous hill towns of Munnar surrounded by tea gardens, and Kumily with its spice plantations.

In addition there are many wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. The Dudhsagar waterfall in Goa, the Jog Falls in Karnataka, and the Athirappally falls in Kerala are amongst the most beautiful in India.

The best way to reach these places in the hills is by road, which in most cases is narrow and winding. One has to drive very carefully on the winding gradients. The two main routes starting from Mumbai are the Mumbai-Chennai highway (AH47) and the Mumbai-Ernakulam highway (NH17). The latter travels along the western coast of India and gives you a roller coaster ride over parts of the Western Ghats. There are railway lines too, stopping at the base stations, from where you can connect to the higher reaches by road. There are two hill railways, one going to Matheran and the other to Ooty.

The best season to explore the Sahyadris is between July and March. In the monsoons (July to September) it can rain very heavily and you may be stranded at a place till the rain subsides.

The hill towns and forest sanctuaries are worth exploring if you are a nature lover and wildlife enthusiast.

My TripAdvisor Review No.87: Al Bek Restaurant, Bengaluru.

“Very Good for Kababs and Biryanis.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2015 NEW

Judging by the crowds at this restaurant it seems to be one of the most popular non vegetarian restaurants in R.T. Nagar. On a Sunday it is almost impossible to get a place to sit and eat here. It is better to get it packed and enjoy the food at your leisure later.

Nevertheless, I waited for a table on their mezzanine floor on a Friday night. After 15 minutes of waiting I finally got a table for the three of us. We ordered a full chicken roast with nan and rotis. It took about 20 minutes for the food to be served. It was worth the wait as the preparation was delicious, and we quite enjoyed it. The prices were very reasonable too.

They have very limited seating in the restaurant on the mezzanine floor, and it is quite crowded too. Service is average because the staff have to keep running up and down the narrow wooden staircase. Most people get their order parceled and carry it away.
