My TripAdvisor Review No.647: Elephant's Head Point, Mahabaleshwar.

Two Elephant’s Heads in Mahabaleshwar At Different Locations.

There are actually two places in Mahabaleshwar associated with Elephant’s heads.

The first one is near Lodwick Point and beyond it. You have to walk about 250 meters from the monument dedicated to General Peter Lodwick on a narrow ridge to an overhanging rock which looks like an elephant’s head. Standing on the head of the elephant you get a spectacular view of the valley below. The overhanging rock looks like the head of an elephant when observed from Lodwick’s memorial. The 250 meter walk is a spine tingling experience in itself.

The second elephant’s head can be seen as you approach Kate’s Point, which is near Nakinda and Avakali, overlooking the Dhom Lake. The gap between the elephant’s trunk and the head looks like a needle-hole from the distance, hence it is also sometimes called the Needle Hole Point.

My TripAdvisor Review No.586: Prospect Point Lookout, Vancouver, Canada.

Panoramic Views Of North And West Vancouver Across The Burrard Inlet.

We reached the Prospect Point Lookout after a scenic 2 km trek from the Bus Loop, near the Stanley Park Toy Railway Station, walking along the Park’s Seawall Trail. We were rewarded with magnificent views of the Lions Gate Bridge taking off towards North and West Vancouver, from the promontory.

Prospect Point Lookout is located at the extreme northern tip of Stanley Park and one can get an almost 270 degree sweeping view of the north, west and south-west which includes the mountains of Vancouver Island in the distance. The views are fantastic and keeps your gaze riveted to the far distance. Try to be here at sunset, which can be quite late in the summer, to take in a glorious sunset.

There is a café and ice-cream shop where one can buy refreshments. There is a good parking lot and public washroom as well.

My TripAdvisor Review No.439: Japanese Garden, Vasco da Gama, Goa.

Panoramic View Of The Arabian Sea.

The Japanese Garden is one of the best lookout points along the Goa coastline. It juts out from a headland about 3 km from Vasco da Gama Railway Station. It is quite an uphill climb to reach from Vasco, but it is accessible by local buses which go to Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) colony, or you can hire a rickshaw or a two-wheeler pilot to take you.

There is a nice garden located here from where you get an excellent 180-degree view of the Arabian Sea and the rocky beach below. There are some ornamental plant and palm trees which make it a nice garden for an evening stroll, but the sea views from the walkway at the edge of the cliff make the visit more worthwhile.

There was not much else to do as the garden was quite deserted in the daytime, but it is a place worth visiting in the evening to view the sunset. There are a few snack stalls nearby which are open only in the evenings.

My TripAdvisor Review No.415: Lakkidi View Point, Wayanad, Kerala.

Sheer Drop from High Range.

Lakkidi View Point is a place on the Kozhikode Bangalore Highway (NH-766, earlier NH-212) from where we can get a bird’s eye view of the plains below, from the high ranges of Wayanad. It is about 7 km drive from Vythiri village.

We drove down from Vythiri, and just after crossing the town of Lakkidi we exited the district of Wayanad in Kerala. There is a narrow parking area by the side of the highway from where we could see the sheer drop down to the coast of Kerala. From this point we got a panoramic view of the valley below, with the serpentine road winding down the mountainside like a coiled snake. A few kilometres below we could see the vehicles wending their way up through the Wayanad Churam and Thamarassery Churam (mountain passes).

Many people stop by at this point just to admire the sheer beauty of the scenery unfolding before them, and to take some pictures. On a cloudy day the atmosphere may become hazy, making it difficult to see much, but one can still enjoy the rising mists and moisture laden breeze. During the monsoons one can also enjoy the many waterfalls trickling down the hillsides.

My TripAdvisor Review No.395: Babington Point, Mahabaleshwar. Jungle Point.

Babington Point used to be a beautiful view point, and I remember walking up to it and enjoying the beautiful view of Koyna Valley from here many years back, but not anymore. The view was obstructed by overgrown trees and bushes and we could see nothing of the valley below. Even the beautiful garden in the centre was overgrown and unkempt, and looked more like a jungle.

This place gets very few visitors. Located only about 2.5 km from the Mahabaleshwar market, it is at best a walking destination to visit on an early morning or evening walk. The green cover is very good and the area has got an aura of peace and serenity about it.

My TripAdvisor Review No.386: Babbington Point, Mahabaleshwar. More of a Picnic Spot Than a View Point.

We went for the view but were sorely disappointed. The view was obstructed by overgrown trees and bushes and we could see nothing of the valley below. Even the beautiful garden in the centre was overgrown and unkempt.

This place gets very few visitors, but we saw some senior citizens enjoying a picnic with their beer and picnic baskets. It is also a good place for a long walk if you are putting up nearby on the Tapola Road and up to the market, since it is only about 2.5 km from the Mahabaleshwar market. The green cover is very good and the area has got an aura of peace and serenity about it.

Babbington Point used to be a very good point, and I remember walking up to it and enjoying the beautiful view of Koyna Valley from here many years back, but not anymore. The Mahabaleshwar Hill Council needs to clean up their act and at least maintain the little garden at the centre so that it becomes more attractive to the tourists.

My TripAdvisor Review No.385: Parsi Point, Panchgani. Good View of Krishna Valley.

Parsi Point is en route from Panchgani to Mahabaleshwar, just 2 km after Panchgani town ST Stand. We stopped here for some time to admire the lovely scenery of the Krishna River and Dhom Dam below in the Krishna Valley. There was a carpet of greenery and some light purple flowers all the way down the hillside amidst the eucalyptus and silver oak trees.

We parked at the side of the road itself and paid a nominal parking fee. One has to be careful as there is a lot of high speed traffic to and from Mahabaleshwar. There are many stalls serving snacks like wada-pao and pakoras, as well as tea, coffee and cold drinks. One can simply enjoy the beautiful scenery of the valley, or gaze through a telescope for a small fee. The keeper of the telescope will give you a virtual guided tour of temples and houses in the villages below or on the hills on the other side. One can easily see the Kamalgad Fort on the opposite hillside.

It is worthwhile to stop here for a while, relax on one of the benches, and enjoy the scenery and the strong breeze which tries to blow you away.

My TripAdvisor Review No.381: Kundadri Hill, Thirthahalli, near Agumbe. Hilltop Near Agumbe, Good for Trekking.

After a visit to the Sringeri Mutt and the Sirimane waterfalls we drove up to the Kundadri Hill. The hilltop is a 28 km drive from Sringeri. We had to take a right turn about 10 km before Agumbe to climb up a very steep and narrow gradient to the top. The ghat road will test your driving skills as there are many dangerous hairpin bends, and the road is not in a good condition. A 4-wheel drive or SUV will make the steep climb easier. On our return we took a different route to Thirthahalli, which was a 36 km drive from the hill.

The hilltop is at a height of about 826 metres above sea level, with the dense forests of the Western Ghats all around. Agumbe is known to be one of the wettest places in the Indian peninsula, and the dense vegetation here is testimony to this fact. There is a 17th century Jain temple located on the hilltop, whose main deity is Parshwanatha, the 23rd tirthankar. Two small ponds formed by the rocks on one side provide water to the temple, and the pilgrims.

The view from the hilltop is indeed awe inspiring, especially if you visit early morning or in the evening to watch the sunrise or sunset. During the monsoons the low hanging clouds can make the scene look even more mesmerising. A trek to the hilltop from the base is an excellent alternative way of visiting the hill for the enthusiastic trekker. One has to be careful during the monsoon because it may be slippery, and there may be leeches along the way.

Very few tourists visit the hilltop due to its relative inaccessibility. Hence there are no restaurants or refreshment stalls, so do carry your own snacks and drinks.

Kundadri is a good destination to visit for the devout Jains, or if you want to admire the resplendent beauty of the Western Ghats, along with a bit of adventure to reach the top.

My TripAdvisor Review No.356: Saputara Adventure Park. Happening Place Of Saputara.

Saputara Adventure Park is the hip and happening place in Saputara. It is located at the same area as the main Sunset Point. It is actually a plateau, like a table land, spread out over a large area on top of the hill, and is also known as the ’Table Point’ of Saputara.

As we drove up to the point we first saw the platform and booking station for the Ropeway Cable Car, next to the Vaity Resort. There is a separate parking area for the Ropeway customers on the right hand side. We had to climb up further to reach the parking lot of the Adventure Park. Parking charges are ₹30 for a car.

We saw a lot of activities in the well spread out plateau, as well as many refreshment stalls a little further away. Kids can enjoy tandem bicycles, pony rides, mini scooters and mobikes, camel rides, rifle shooting and other games. The place looked like a big Fun-Fair where one can spend a good few hours of fun and games.

Further up towards the cliff, there was a board indicating availability of paragliding, ziplining and rappelling, though we did not see anyone doing it. We did see some youth trying their hand at rock climbing. There was another board warning people to be careful while taking selfies!

We had a leisurely walk around the Adventure Park admiring the scenery from the highest point of Saputara. Then we had some onion pakoras and a cup of tea at one of the many snack stalls.

It’s a good place to enjoy the evening with activities for kids, while the parents admire the sunset.

My TripAdvisor Review No.337: Sunrise Point, Saputara.

Good Point, But Still Being Beautified.

Sunrise Point is at the other end of Saputara hill town, away from the main attractions like Sunset Point, Lake, Ropeway, et al. There is a steep motorable ghat road leading up to the point. The road seemed to have been recently done up or repaired, as it was in quite a good condition. There is a huge parking lot at the base, from where we had to trek up to the top of the hill.

The point is quite well laid out like a step garden, but there was very little greenery to soothe the eyes. It could be because we were visiting at the end of summer, and the rains had still not arrived with its beautiful magical green carpet. Also there were very few trees to break the monotony of the brown landscape.

The only good thing about the Sunrise Point is its layout. It has been developed at different layers with a dedicated area for walkers and joggers. There are many benches along the way, where the senior citizens can relax for a while, and guard railings have been installed for safety at the periphery of each terrace. We got a 360 degree view of Saputara town from the top.

We visited the point at mid-day and it was quite warm. Of course, the best time to visit would be at sunrise, and that is around 6 am in summer.

My TripAdvisor Review No.336: Table Point, Saputara.

Many Activities and Rides Available.

Table Point is also known as Adventure Park of Saputara hill town. It is close to the starting point of the Vaity Rope Way also. There is a narrow ghat road winding up to the Table Point and you have to drive carefully up. There are two parking lots, the lower one is reserved exclusively for the Vaity Rope Way customers, and the upper one is the pay-and-park for the Table Point. The charges are Rs.30 for one time parking.

A lot of activities and rides are available on the wide open plateau, which looks very much like the Table Land at Panchgani. We saw people enjoying mini scooter rides, tandem bike rides, camel rides, pony rides and battery operated cars. Paragliding can be done at the far eastern ridge of Table Point. If you get exhausted with all these activities then there are many refreshment stalls where we get hot snacks or cold drinks.

We enjoyed a quiet walk around the edge of Table Point. There were good views overlooking the plains and a stiff breeze blowing. At one end there was a steep cliff where people were taking ‘selfies’ in spite of a warning sign prohibiting selfies beyond that point. We had a plate of onion pakoras and a cup of coffee before leaving.

My TripAdvisor Review No.335: Sunset Point, Saputara.

Good Place to View Sunset.

Sunset Point is also known as Table Point or Adventure Park of Saputara hill town. Best time to go here is around 6 pm in summer so that one can view the sun as it is setting. We went a bit too early so we did not actually witness the beauty of the sunset, but we did enjoy a cool walk around the huge plateau.

It is also near to the place where you can take the ropeway to another nearby peak. In addition there are many other activities like scooter and bicycle rides, pony and camel rides, or just relax with a snack or ice candy.

There is a pay-and-park for cars, which charges Rs.30 for the day. You can spend as much time as you like here. Kids would enjoy the rides.

My TripAdvisor Review No.75: Wilson Point (Sunrise Point), Mahabaleshwar.

“Highest Point in Mahabaleshwar.”

4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2015
This is the highest point in Mahabaleshwar, at an altitude of 1435 metres. It is about 2 km from the Market as you go along the Satara Road. After about 1 km from the market you have to take a left turn when you see the sign board of ‘Hotel Gautam’. The road leading up to the point is very steep and narrow and you have to be very careful while driving up. This road goes all the way up and around the point and emerges back on Satara Road a little further up. It is supposed to be a one way street, but you may still encounter some cars coming the wrong way.

Wilson Point is a large rocky plateau, with three viewing platforms where many tourists come to view the sunrise. The perimeter of this plateau is more than a kilometre and is an excellent place for a morning or evening walk, if you are staying nearby.

From the viewing platforms you get excellent 180 degree views of the bungalows and tree covered hills all around. The platforms are always crowded early in the morning, even if it is a cloudy day. The beautiful sunrise viewed from here on a clear day is indeed spectacular to watch.

Being the closest point to the market, one can even drive up to the point around sunset and view the twinkling lights of Mahabaleshwar town and Panchgani in the distance.

“A Himalayan Spectacle!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2014
Zero Point is located at the highest point in Binsar Wild Life Sanctuary, near Almora. There is a motorable road upto the KMVN Tourist Rest House from where you have to walk 1.5 km to reach the lookout platform.
On a clear day you get a mesmerizing view of the snow capped Himalayas. You can see the peaks of Chaukhamba, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Shivling and Panchachuli among others.

“Best view of Mahabaleshwar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2013
You get a bird's eye view of Mahabaleshwar from here. There is a motor-able road leading to the point but you have to climb about 50 steps to reach the top, but it's well worth the trouble.
