Excellent Maharashtrian Thali.

This traditional Maharashtrian restaurant is located in one of the narrow lanes near the Mahalaxmi Temple of Kolhapur. If you are visiting for the first time you may have some difficulty locating it. We had to enquire from the local shops to find the exact location.

This ‘Bhojanalaya’ or ‘kitchen where you can buy yourself a meal’ serves one of the best Maharashtrian thali meals in Kolhapur. We asked for a ‘Jowar Bhakri Thali’ wherein we were served a platter with two millet breads, eggplant (baingan) masala and mashed eggplant (baingan bhartha), a dry cabbage bhaji, rasam (spicy vegetable soup), pithala (a thick gravy made from chickpea flour), chutney, koshimbir (finely chopped salad), rice and papad. The taste of each item was unique and wonderful.

They also serve some snacks like ‘Misal’ and some sweet dishes like Gulab Jamun, Basundi, Puran Poli and Shrikhand.

“A very pious temple.”

This is a very interesting temple about 12 km from Kaniyakumari, dedicated to the three main deities of Hinduism; Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The three deities are in a single form called Sthanumalayam.

All men have to enter only after removing their shirts and vests, and the women have to be either in a sari or salwar kameez. You have to buy at least two flower garlands as offerings to the deities. We had to keep all our stuff in the lockers near the entrance, including cameras and cellphones, and pay a token amount for the locker hire.

A guide, who could speak to us in Hindi, offered his services as we entered (pay as you wish). He told us quite a few interesting facts about the temple and its rituals, which we would not have learned about otherwise. The musical pillars were particularly fascinating. Each pillar emitted a different musical note when we thumped it with our hands. There was an 18 feet tall Hanuman idol, and a huge hall with more than 1000 carved stone pillars.

Photography is prohibited inside the temple.

There is a pretty pond just outside the temple. We were quite impressed by the temple architecture, and its surroundings.

“Good for Traditional Kolhapuri cuisine.”

We had dinner and breakfast at the Opal dining hall when we stayed overnight at the hotel for one night.

The dining hall which serves mainly Kolhapuri veg and non veg dishes, but also has some North Indian and Chinese dishes. We ordered the Regular Veg Thali which consisted of 3 vegetables, curry, chapatti, masala rice and papad. Their special thali also has some savouries and sweet dishes thrown in. However this dining hall is quite famous for its Tambada and Pandhara Rassa gravies served with their traditional mutton preparations.

Next morning we went down for their complimentary buffet breakfast and were served medu wada with sambar and chutney, missal with bread, and sheera, followed by tea or coffee.

We enjoyed the taste of their traditional spicy Kolhapuri cuisine and would definitely visit again.
